Ubisoft’s Assassin's Creed Origins has taken on a new look with the sweeping-desert vistas of Ancient Egypt. Pyramids, Sphinxes, Tutankhamen and all can be explored.
You assume control of the the character Bayek, the last representative of the Medjay, a long and ancient line of protectors. The keeper of traditions and beliefs of ancient Egypt, and the power to execute justice to protect those in need.
During his quest he will cross paths with powerful historic figures like Cleopatra, Ptolemy XIII or Julius Caesar.
For better or worse, Assassin's Creed Origins is now an RPG.
That shifting aspect of the game is reflected in a number of different ways. Not least of them the addition of a difficulty setting, a first for the series.
The idea is to ensure that while gameplay is deeper and more challenging it still remains accessible to everyone.
If you're more into the narrative or the historical element, you can set the game to an easier setting but if you really want that very difficult challenge, you can set the game to a harder setting. The difficulty level won't be locked, so you'll be able to dial it up or down to deal with any bumps in the road as you go.
No “game over’ screen if you fail a mission – unless you die of course. If you fail to stealthily follow your target or perhaps they manage to escape? The game will continue, only for you to locate your target again within the sprawling map.
Origins has upped its game with new gameplay features like the new system that assigns a numerical level representing strength, and difficulty to kill. You’ll need to be extra careful when targeting enemies as these level differences can be significant.
Assassin’s Creed’s combat mechanics have been completely revamped for Origins with light and heavy attacks mapped to your right-hand triggers, and a shield-based block placed on the top-left trigger. Combat feels substantially more realistic and challenging, and a lot more tactical.
This feels like a completely new game - so for those who were hoping for change, then you certainly have it here.
